Physical Education and Athletics

Physical Education and Athletics Overview

Tower School’s physical education and athletic curriculums reflect the school’s mission. We teach students the benefits of physical activity and promote good character, sportsmanship, leadership skills and the value of teamwork.

The program has high standards; we challenge students to seek personal levels of excellence in a supportive environment. Participation is expected of all students.

LOWER SCHOOL
Young children hone individual skills through movement such as climbing, balancing, running, throwing and kicking. Students in grade four learn team sports with a particular focus on soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. In grades four five, students participate in intramural sports.

UPPER SCHOOL
Upper school students participate in interscholastic sports, and choose between cross-country, soccer, basketball, lacrosse as well as an outdoor activities program that emphasizes fitness and a healthy lifestyle.

Tower strives to instill leadership skills and an appreciation for the value of teamwork in students of all ages.

We seek to field competitive interscholastic teams. When competing against one another or other schools, we arrive on the field with a play-to-win attitude, but a winning record is neither a goal nor a priority. Effort, fair play, and good sportsmanship are always the most important outcomes.

Goals

Through the continuity of Tower's physical education and athletics curriculum, we will:

  • encourage lifelong enjoyment of physical fitness;
  • impart the value of sportsmanship and good character–on the field and off;
  • provide leadership opportunities for athletes of all ability levels;
  • give each student the experience of playing on a competitive team;
  • provide high-quality instruction and supportive, enthusiastic coaching for all athletes;
  • demonstrate the correlation between hard work and improved skills;
  • elevate school spirit–we hope our students will have fun playing sports at Tower;
  • provide meaningful playing time in each game for which our athletes are prepared. Players will share fairly the playing time in every game.
