Pre-K Recess

Tower’s Pre-Kindergarten program supports the understanding that positive relationships are essential for children to develop personal responsibility, self-regulation, and to foster academic learning and growth. Tower’s research-based curriculum promotes learning for the whole child in all of the developmental domains: physical, cognitive, language, social, and emotional. Our days are intentionally designed to maximize learning through creative expression, play, and developmentally appropriate academic study. Young children’s learning is connected to their developmental needs.

Developmental readiness for school varies among young children. To honor that developmental range, Tower offers both a half-day academic program as well as a full-day academic program to our Pre-Kindergarten students.

Pre-Kindergarten Curriculum Overview

Mathematics

  • Sequence numerals 1-10
  • Count by 5s and 10s
  • Compare quantities and sizes of objects
  • Concept of zero
  • Estimate
  • Count with one-to-one correspondence
  • Begin to write numbers, associate a numeral with a quantity
  • Predict and extend patterns
  • Sorts and classifies information using limited variables
  • Recognize and name shapes
  • Create and interpret simple graphs
  • Develop sense of days in a week, months in a year

Language Arts

  • Phonemic awareness, including:
    • develop rhyming awareness and construction
    • identify words that rhyme
    • identify individual phoneme isolation (beginning, middle, final)
    • substitute and add beginning phoneme to make a new word
    • say phonemes in words with 2, 3 and 4 phonemes
    • alliteration
    • sound and word discrimination,
    • clap syllables in 2 and 3 syllable words
  • Interpret symbolic representation: able to recite ABC’s, letter awareness and recognition as a prequel to sight-word recognition, symbols, signs, labels, and rebuses are interpreted for language arts development
  • Introduction to Wilson Fundations Program
  • Understand the basic structure of a story (beginning, middle, and end) and be able to orally contribute to the creation or outline of a story or event
  • Illustrate pictures and signs to convey meaning
  • Apply early writing skills, incorporating name spelling and inventive spelling (spelling the sounds that you hear)

Social-Emotional Learning

  • Responsive Classroom approach; skills include: cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, and self-control
    • Practice habits of good classroom citizenship
    • Develop self reliance and self-help skills
    • Develop self-control by following rules and routines
    • Listen to and respect others
    • Identify the appropriate ways to resolve conflict within the classroom environment
    • Understand the importance of sharing, taking turns, and working together

Science

  • Learn the basics of scientific method: observation, prediction, and conclusion
  • Chart weather patterns and make weather graphs
  • Exploration with rulers, yardsticks, and measuring tapes
  • Hibernation, animals in winter
  • Extensive focus on health, including: hygiene, food pyramid, healthy vs. unhealthy, exercise, sleep, germs
  • Five senses
  • Life cycles: pumpkins, plants
  • Care and maintenance of individual plants grown from seed
  • Life on a farm

Social Studies

  • Display a sense of community at home and at school
  • Discussion of and participation in units: all about me, friendship, family, yearly holidays, community helpers

Library

  • Become familiar with the library
  • Understand library procedures for checking books out, caring for books, and returning books
  • Listen to picture books, both fiction and nonfiction
  • Show understanding through drawing
  • Develop a love of books and reading

Music

  • Sing tunefully within the range of a major 6th
  • Build a repertoire of songs, games, and rhymes
  • Demonstrate a steady beat
  • Be aware of body space — individual and moving in a circle
  • Improvise motions to know songs
  • Identify and demonstrate understanding of fast and slow; loud and soft; high and low; short and long; same and different

Visual Arts

  • Experiment with using primary colors to create secondary colors
  • Identify, draw, and combine different lines and simple geometric shapes to create more complex drawings
  • Understand the terms horizontal and vertical
  • Complete a 3-D multi-step long-term project
  • Create texture with clay
  • Be familiar and confident with a variety of materials and methods
  • Introduce and participate in a community critique using Pre-K art vocabulary

Physical Education

  • Demonstrate improving locomotor movements
  • Perform manipulative skills such as kicking, throwing and rolling
  • Move in self-space while respecting others’ boundaries
  • Demonstrate an understanding of beginning game play
  • Gain awareness of our healthy bodies through play, yoga, and exercises


Tim and I know that we made the right decision for our children and that they are in a happy, safe, academically challenging learning environment where they also have fun. Logistically having them at one school with bus transportation from Nahant in the morning has been a bonus for our schedules!
