The Kindergarten year builds upon the experiences and learning of Pre-Kindergarten. As the children work together, listen to, and show respect for each other, they hone their social skills and are cooperative and productive members of the group. A positive learning environment is created through routines, predictable structure, and reasonable rules. This supportive atmosphere allows the students to feel safe and to begin to take academic and social risks. The various group activities and academic endeavors, which are integrated throughout all aspects of the curriculum, allow children to develop and demonstrate problem-solving and creative-thinking skills.

Kindergarten Curriculum


  • Recognize and write numbers 0–20; touch and count accurately using one-to-one correspondence
  • Categorize attributes and patterns using multiple variables
  • Develop appropriate math vocabulary
  • Recognize and identify geometric shapes
  • Begin to understand and employ simple addition and subtraction sentences

Language Arts

  • Recognize and form the alphabet and develop sound symbol correspondence using Wilson Fundation program
  • Develop a basic sight word vocabulary
  • Understand and sequence the basic structure of stories. Begin to write stories with a beginning, middle, and end
  • Develop effective listening and speaking skills
  • Take risks in writing and explore with inventive spelling


  • A simple study on bones with a focus on the human skeleton
  • Basic introduction to dinosaurs, fossils, and evolution the study of oviparous animals
  • Discovering and learning about the planets in our solar system
  • Ecology with a focus on our environment and the three R's—reduce, reuse, recycle
  • Introduce and begin to understand life cycles with a focus on butterflies

Social Studies

  • Practice habits of good classroom citizenship
  • Develop self reliance and self-help skills
  • Develop self-control by following rules and routines

  • Clap and walk to a steady beat at different tempos

  • Introduction to the instruments of the orchestra

Visual Arts

• Practice color mixing, making secondary colors and tints

• Develop and practice observation skills for drawing

• Continue to use geometric shapes and various lines to create complex drawings, prints, or paintings

• Begin to develop decision making and problem solving skills throughout the creative process

• Execute “score and slip” clay joints and glaze a ceramic piece

• Introduce and participate in a community critique using Kindergarten art vocabulary

Physical Education

  • Perform various locomotor movements with greater efficiency
  • Begin to perform manipulative skills with greater control using a continuous form
  • Move in and out of self-space, changing direction while respecting the space of others
  • Demonstrate an understanding of intermediate game play strategies
  • Work cooperatively in partner and small group scenarios
  • Understand the relationship between making decisions and being flexible
