Statement on Diversity

Tower School embraces the value of a diverse, multicultural, and cohesive school community. Central to our mission is our belief in the inherent dignity and humanity of all persons. We are committed to an environment in which differences among all members of our community — including, but not limited to, differences in race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, learning style, age, gender, physical attributes, and ability — are recognized as a vital and integral force in fostering a community of respect and tolerance. Diversity brings multiple perspectives to our environment; it cultivates the exchange and the challenge of new ideas; it honors varied traditions and cultures; and it teaches, in conjunction with our academic curriculum, the humanistic skills necessary for functioning ethically and effectively in our community and in our increasingly complex, global society.

Diversity Action Plan

GOAL 1: The Board of Trustees will actively understand, support, and articulate the educational benefits of a diverse community as written in the Philosophy Statement on Diversity and will cultivate future leadership and membership of those who will serve to carry this work forward.

GOAL 2: The Board of Trustees will take steps to obtain financial resources for the institution to become ethnically and socio-economically diverse.

GOAL 3: The Board of Trustees will reflect the diversity of both the student body and the faculty of Tower School as we believe the leadership of Tower will be enhanced by those who come from diverse backgrounds.

GOAL 4: Tower faculty will more accurately reflect the world in which we live, as we believe that the day-to-day experiences of all students will be enriched by those who come from diverse backgrounds.

GOAL 5: The school will provide an educational environment that more accurately reflects diversity for all students and the benefits of a racially diverse classroom environment.

GOAL 6: The administration, faculty, and staff will understand, support, and articulate the educational benefits of a diverse community and will teach a curriculum, regardless of the discipline, that fosters the development of cultural competence for our students.

GOAL 7: The administration will seek ways to provide access to Tower’s facilities and expertise in the educational arena to the broader community.

GOAL 8: Tower parents will understand the importance of creating a diverse community for all students. In accordance with Tower’s mission, core values, and our Philosophy Statement on Diversity, Tower parents will support and embrace a multicultural educational environment and curriculum.
